✏️Our Journey begins: First Chapter

Hello everyone😉

This is the volunteers from the Eyes wide open team. We came here, to Bergolo Italy, from different parts of the world to connect with nature and learn about sustainability, permaculture and ecology. We came here on the 30th of June and will be staying here until the 31st of July. During this month, we will be posting weekly hargé stalking about what we managed to do and learn in the previous week. This is our first report!

Since this was our first week, we spent a signifiant part of it by adjusting to the area, learning the philosophy and goals of this project and getting to know eachother.

A big part of this project is about the manual work. For most of us, this was the first time doing tasks like this. During the first few days, we worked on creating two tables, a new mailbox and a wooden trash bin for our camping area. We also started bulding new stairs nearby our garden. Additionally, we have started working on a new hayloft. As both of them are big projects, we are still working on them tho 

We were also working on the garden. As gardening is new for all for us, we were taught the basics by Sylvia, who is in charge of the garden. One morning was also dedicated to a workshop about permaculture, which was led by Sylvia herself. The topic of permaculture is highly important as the garden follows the principles of permaculture and is meant to serve as a didactical tool for spreading awareness about sustainable ways of living.

Unfortunatelly, in the afternoon after the workhop a strong storm came to the region, causing great damage throughout Bergolo and nearby towns. Aside from cars, and windows, the storm also damaged the garden and washed away all the plants. This was a big shock for all of us, yet also an important lesson. It was also an opportunity for us to apply the permacultural values that we learnt in the workshop. And that is to observe the current situation and adapt to it.

An important part of our week was also getting to know eachother and working on bonding. Every day we try to build a community which works in an efficient way. We play numerous games, focus on gratefullness and also make sure that we make time for talking about our feelings, reflect how we work together and how we can make things better. By now, all of us are aware that living in a community is a hard work that must be worked on everyday.

See you next week!
